Living Room, Furniture, Carpet, 23’-0” x 19’-6” x 12’-0”, 2008.
This installation in Harlem during the Homebase Project III in 2008 conceptualizes a living room as a performance scored in furniture and enacted by those who enter it. Here all the elements of a typical living room are provided; carpet, television, coffee table, sofa, dining table and chairs. To make the performative nature of our every day spaces explicit, I reversed the order of installation, furniture first then carpet after. In doing so, architectural instructions that were normally proscriptive became necessarily interpreted by each occupant.
